Sonia Smith, a 25-year-old woman, was tragically murdered on August 19, 1980, in Los Angeles, California. Her body was discovered in an abandoned field, with her wrists and ankles bound, a detail that suggested a calculated and methodical approach by her killer. Investigators later found that her murder bore striking similarities to another case that occurred just months later—the killing of 25-year-old Phyllis McClinton, who was also found in an abandoned field with her wrists and ankles tied.
Authorities eventually identified a suspect in connection with these murders. Larry D. Hubbard, a man with a criminal past, had escaped from a Florida prison in 1977 after being convicted of robbery. He was later arrested in Ontario, California, in 2007 for an outstanding Florida warrant. During their investigation, LAPD detectives uncovered links between Hubbard and multiple unsolved murders in Southern California, including Sonia Smith’s case. DNA evidence played a crucial role in connecting Hubbard to Smith’s murder, as well as the killings of Vanessa Williams and Christine Fields, which occurred in 2000 in Pomona and Riverside County, respectively.
Hubbard had also been implicated in an assault case in November 1980, where a woman was attacked and bound in a manner similar to Smith and McClinton. This survivor identified Hubbard as her assailant, leading to his arrest and conviction for false imprisonment. He was sentenced to six months in prison and four years' probation. However, it wasn’t until 2007 that forensic advancements allowed investigators to link Hubbard’s DNA to Smith’s murder. Before he could face justice for these crimes, Hubbard was extradited to Florida, where he attempted to hang himself. He ultimately died from complications on January 13, 2008.
Authorities believe Hubbard may have been responsible for additional murders beyond those officially linked to him. His pattern of targeting women and the gaps between known killings suggest that there may be other victims whose cases remain unsolved. The LAPD and other law enforcement agencies continued to investigate his potential involvement in other crimes, urging anyone with information to come forward.
