Sean Patrick Goble: The Long-Haul Trucker Who Murdered Women Along Interstate Highways

Sean Patrick Goble is an American serial killer and former long-haul truck driver who confessed to killing three women during a short period in early 1995. His occupation allowed him to travel across state lines for long periods of time, moving through truck stops, service stations and interstate corridors where he came into contact with women who were living transient lifestyles or engaging in sex work. Goble's confirmed crimes occurred in Tennessee and North Carolina, while the bodies of his victims were abandoned in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. The geographic separation between the places where the women were encountered, murdered and eventually discovered complicated the investigations and drew the attention of authorities in several states. After Goble was identified as a suspect in April 1995, investigators began comparing his trucking routes with numerous unsolved murders of women whose bodies had been found near interstate highways. Although he was investigated in connection with additional cases, only three murders were ultimately attributed to him through his confessions and criminal proceedings.

Sean Patrick Goble's Background

Sean Patrick Goble was born on November 1, 1966. By 1995, he was living in Asheboro, North Carolina, and working as a long-distance truck driver. At approximately 300 pounds, Goble was physically imposing, and his Peterbilt tractor-trailer reportedly carried the words "The Wild One." Long-haul trucking gave Goble an unusual degree of mobility. He regularly traveled through several states and spent considerable time at truck stops and service areas. These locations became important to the investigation because they provided opportunities for Goble to meet women while he was hundreds of miles from his home. The interstate highway system also created significant investigative difficulties. A victim could meet a killer in one state, be murdered in another jurisdiction and then be abandoned along a highway in a third state. Investigators initially had little reason to know that apparently separate homicide cases might involve the same offender.

The Confirmed Victims

Three women are known victims of Sean Patrick Goble. Contemporary law-enforcement reports and subsequent case records identify them as Brenda Kay Hagy, Sherry Tew Mansur and Alice Rebecca Hanes. The dates below reflect the reported dates associated with their deaths and the discovery of their bodies.

• Brenda Kay Hagy, 45 January 23, 1995 Greene County, Tennessee / Washington County, Virginia: Hagy was from Bloomington, Indiana. Goble admitted encountering her in Tennessee and strangling her at or near a truck stop along the Interstate 81 corridor in Greene County. He then transported her body north into Virginia. Hagy's body was discovered on January 23, 1995, beside Interstate 81 near Abingdon in Washington County, Virginia.
• Sherry Tew Mansur, 34 February 19, 1995 North Carolina: Mansur had a last known address in Clearwater, Florida. Her body was found on February 19, 1995, near Interstate 40 in Guilford County, North Carolina. She remained unidentified for approximately two months before fingerprints established her identity. Goble confessed to killing her, and investigators determined that the homicide was connected to Orange County, North Carolina.
• Alice Rebecca Hanes, 36 March 19, 1995 Jefferson County / Kingsport, Tennessee: Hanes was from Columbus, Ohio. Goble admitted meeting her while traveling and eventually taking her into his truck. He confessed to killing her in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Her body was discovered on March 19, 1995, beside Interstate 81 in the Kingsport area of Tennessee. Investigators later recovered property belonging to Hanes from Goble's truck.
