Background

Russell Ellwood, a former taxi driver, was convicted of murdering Cheryl Lewis, one of 26 women found dead in swampy areas around New Orleans from 1991 through 1996. Ellwood was suspected of killing as many as 15 women, but authorities could only pin one murder on him.

Crimes

Ellwood's crimes primarily targeted women with histories of drug abuse and prostitution. Some of the victims were transsexuals. The victims were found in isolated locations, often in water, which led to extreme decomposition and destruction of evidence.

Victims

• Cheryl Lewis: Reported missing on February 2, 1993. Her body was found on February 21, 1993, in a canal off Highway LA 3160 in Hahnville, Louisiana.
• Danielle Britton: Found on August 4, 1991, in a ditch covered with garbage. She had been beaten and strangled.
• Tyra Tassin: Found on September 3, 1991. She had a criminal record for drug possession.
• Charlene Price: Found on September 22, 1991, in a New Orleans park. She had been beaten and strangled.
• Regina Oko: Found on November 21, 1991. She had multiple arrests for prostitution and had taken a large dose of cocaine before her death.
