In February 1993, the body of 42-year-old Delores Mack was discovered in a canal along Louisiana Highway 3160 in Hahnville. Her death was determined to be a homicide by strangulation. Mack's body was found just a day after and approximately 800 feet away from the location where another female victim, Cheryl Lewis, had been discovered.
The discovery of Mack's body was part of a wider investigation into a series of deaths of women in and around the New Orleans area during the early 1990s,
which led authorities to believe a serial killer was at large. In connection with the deaths of both Delores Mack and Cheryl Lewis, authorities arrested a former taxi driver named Russell Ellwood. He was considered a prime suspect in numerous other killings that shared similar characteristics.
While Ellwood was charged with the murders of both Mack and Lewis, the case against him for Mack's death was ultimately dropped. He was, however, convicted of the murder of Cheryl Lewis and sentenced to life in prison. Ellwood maintained his innocence and died in prison in 2014. No one else was ever charged in connection with the murder of Delores Mack.
