During their walk, he attempted to assault her sexually. When Robertson resisted, White violently attacked her by biting, scratching, and smashing her head into the concrete sidewalk. She succumbed to her injuries the following day. Witnesses and evidence at the scene led to White's arrest in June 1980. He confessed, claiming he intended only to rape her, not kill her. Subsequently, he was convicted of first-degree manslaughter and sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison.
