Bruce D. Mendenhall: The Truck Stop Serial Killer
Background
Bruce Delane Mendenhall, born on April 14, 1951, in Crawford County, Illinois, is a convicted American serial killer. Prior to his arrest, he worked as a long-haul truck driver, a profession that facilitated his cross-country crimes. Mendenhall was married to Linda and had three children. His occupation allowed him to traverse various states, providing opportunities to commit multiple murders without immediate detection.
Modus Operandi
Mendenhall primarily targeted women involved in prostitution at truck stops across several states. His typical method involved shooting his victims with a .22-caliber firearm. However, evidence suggests he employed other methods in certain instances, indicating a degree of variability in his killing techniques.
Arrest and Investigation
On July 12, 2007, Mendenhall was apprehended at a TA truck stop on Interstate 24 in Nashville, Tennessee. Detective Sergeant Pat Postiglione noticed a truck matching the description from surveillance footage related to a recent murder. Upon inspecting Mendenhall's truck, authorities discovered a large quantity of bloody clothing, personal effects of a missing Indianapolis woman, and blood spots throughout the cab, including on the steering wheel and Mendenhall's hands. Further examination revealed items such as a rifle, knives, handcuffs, latex gloves, weapons cartridges, black tape, a nightstick, and sex toys. DNA analysis linked these items to multiple women, leading to Mendenhall's arrest and subsequent charges.
