David N. Anderson and the 2019 Jersey City Attacks

Overview

On December 10, 2019, David N. Anderson, 47, and his accomplice Francine Graham, 50, carried out a targeted, antisemitic attack in Jersey City, New Jersey. The violence began with the killing of Detective Joseph A. Seals at Bayview Cemetery and continued at the JC Kosher Supermarket in the city’s Greenville section, where three more civilians were murdered before a prolonged gun battle ended with the assailants’ deaths. Authorities later classified the incident as domestic terrorism motivated by antisemitism and hatred of law enforcement.

~12:30 p.m. EST – Bayview Cemetery: Detective Joseph Seals encountered Anderson and Graham near a stolen U-Haul van linked to an earlier homicide; he was shot and killed. A bystander reported the discovery of his body at 12:38 p.m. ~12:21 p.m. to ~3:45 p.m. – JC Kosher Supermarket, 223 Martin Luther King Dr., Jersey City: The assailants arrived, immediately opened fire inside the store, and murdered three civilians “within minutes,” sparking a multi-hour firefight with police that ended when armored officers breached the storefront. A live pipe bomb was later found in the suspects’ van.
