Francine Graham and the 2019 Jersey City Attack

Overview

On December 10, 2019, Francine Graham, alongside David N. Anderson, carried out a deadly, targeted attack in Jersey City, New Jersey. The pair first killed a police detective in Bayview Cemetery, then drove to the JC Kosher Supermarket on Martin Luther King Drive, where they murdered three civilians and engaged police in a prolonged firefight before being killed. Authorities characterized the assault as domestic terrorism fueled by antisemitism and hatred of law enforcement.

December 3, 2019: Investigators later linked the pair to shots fired at a visibly Jewish motorist’s vehicle on U.S. Route 1/9 near Newark and Elizabeth; ballistics and phone records tied the incident to them. December 7, 2019: The suspects were also tied to the homicide of Uber driver Michael Rumberger in Bayonne the weekend before the attack; his blood and DNA evidence were connected to items belonging to the assailants. December 10, 2019 (~12:30 p.m.): Detective Joseph A. Seals encountered the suspects at Bayview Cemetery and was fatally shot. December 10, 2019 (~12:21–3:30 p.m.): The attackers then drove to the JC Kosher Supermarket and opened fire. The siege and gun battle with police lasted several hours, ending when officers breached the storefront with an armored vehicle and neutralized both assailants.

Police recovered multiple firearms and discovered a live improvised explosive device in the U-Haul van used by the attackers.
