Francisco Acevedo: A Detailed Account of His Crimes

Early Life and Background

Francisco Acevedo was born on September 2, 1968, in Meriden, Connecticut. He was one of three children to his mother, Yadira Acevedo. At the age of 14, following his parents' divorce, he moved in with his father. Court records indicate that by the age of 12, Acevedo had begun abusing alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine. He dropped out of high school during his freshman year and held various jobs, including positions as a laborer, cook at a pizzeria, dishwasher at Testa's Silvertown Inn, and a midnight baker at Dunkin' Donuts. In the 1990s, while residing in Mount Vernon, New York, he met his wife while working at New Way Kitchen, and together they had two sons.

Initial Criminal Activities

On July 3, 1986, at approximately 18 years old, Acevedo committed a heinous act in Meriden, Connecticut. He picked up a woman in his company truck, drove her to a secluded area, bound her hands, blindfolded her, and sexually assaulted her. The victim managed to escape after Acevedo fell asleep. Subsequently, he was arrested and sentenced to ten years in prison but was released in June 1988.

The Murders

Between 1989 and 1996, Acevedo embarked on a series of murders in New York, targeting vulnerable women. Each victim was found naked, beaten, and posed after death. The known victims are:
  • Maria Ramos: A 26-year-old from the Bronx, murdered on February 5, 1989. Her body was discovered near a sewage plant in Yonkers, with her hands tied behind her back using her own pantyhose. She had been strangled and sexually assaulted.
  • Tawanda Hodges: A 28-year-old from the Bronx, killed on March 28, 1991. Her body was found in the backyard of a fuel-oil storage terminal in Yonkers, similarly bound and strangled.
  • Kimberly Moore: A 30-year-old from Greenburgh, murdered on May 24, 1996. Her body was discovered in a motel room in Yonkers, exhibiting the same signs of assault and strangulation.
