Thor Nis Christiansen: The Isla Vista Serial Killer
Introduction
Thor Nis Christiansen was an American serial killer who targeted young women in California in the late 1970s. His reign of terror left a mark on the Santa Barbara community, particularly in the college town of Isla Vista, where he murdered multiple victims. His method was chilling—he abducted and executed his victims with gunshots to the head, leaving their bodies in remote areas.
The Crimes
Between 1976 and 1979, Christiansen killed at least four women and attempted to kill another. His crimes primarily took place in Isla Vista, a student-populated neighborhood near the University of California, Santa Barbara. Below is a list of his known victims:
- Jacqueline Ann Rook – Disappeared on November 20, 1976, at the age of 21. Her remains were discovered in a remote area in 1977.
- Mary Ann Sarris – Vanished on December 6, 1976, at the age of 19. Her body was found alongside Rook’s remains.
- Patricia Marie Laney – A 21-year-old who disappeared in January 1977. Like the others, her remains were found dumped in a remote location.
- Laura Sue Benjamin – Murdered on March 22, 1979. She was Christiansen's only known victim of African American descent, suggesting he may have changed his victim profile over time.
- Surviving Victim: Lydia Preston – On April 18, 1979, Christiansen attempted to kill 23-year-old Lydia Preston, shooting her in the head. Miraculously, she survived and later identified him as her attacker, leading to his arrest.
Modus Operandi
Christiansen’s method involved luring women into his vehicle, often by offering them rides. Once inside, he would drive them to isolated areas, shoot them in the head with a .22 caliber firearm, and leave their bodies in remote locations.
