Margie Velma Barfield, born on October 29, 1932, in Eastover, North Carolina, had a troubled childhood. She was reportedly physically abused by her father and sought escape through marriage.

First Marriage and Crime

Barfield married Thomas Burke in 1949. The couple had two children, but their relationship deteriorated after Barfield's hysterectomy and subsequent drug addiction. On April 4, 1969, Burke died in a house fire while Barfield and the children were away.
