Background

Raymond Carl Taylor, also known as Carl Taylor, was a member of the notorious McCrary-Taylor crime family. This group, led by patriarch Sherman McCrary, included McCrary's wife Carolyn, their son Danny, their daughter Ginger, and son-in-law Carl Taylor. Originating from Texas, the family embarked on a cross-country crime spree in the early 1970s, leaving a trail of violence and death in their wake.

Criminal Activities

The McCrary-Taylor family's criminal activities escalated from petty thefts to a series of brutal murders. Their modus operandi often involved robbing establishments, abducting female employees, and subsequently murdering them. The victims were typically young women working in donut shops or similar establishments.

Notable Crimes

  • August 12, 1971: Sherri Lee Martin, 17, was abducted from a Winchell's Donut Shop in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her body was discovered on September 4, 1971, near Wendover, Nevada. She had been shot multiple times with a .32 caliber weapon.
  • August 20, 1971: Leeora Rose Looney, 20, was kidnapped from a donut shop in Lakewood, Colorado. Her body was found three days later near the Wyoming border. She had been strangled, raped, and shot multiple times with a .32 caliber weapon.
  • September 28, 1971: Elizabeth Perryman, 26, was abducted from a restaurant at the Texas Tech campus near Lubbock, Texas. Her remains were found on December 19, 1971, on a ranch near Amarillo.
  • October 17, 1971: Forrest Covey, 24, and his wife Jena Covey, 19, disappeared from a drive-in grocery in Mesquite, Texas. Their bodies were discovered on October 24, 1971, in an abandoned barn in Quinlan, Texas. Both had been shot multiple times with .32 and .22 caliber weapons.
  • October 20, 1971: Susan Darlene Shaw, 16, was abducted from a donut shop in Mesquite, Texas. Her body was found on October 24, 1971, alongside the Coveys.
  • February 1972: Cynthia Ann Glass, 25, was kidnapped from Portland, Oregon. Her body was later found near Woodland, Washington. The ballistic evidence linked her murder to the same weapons used in previous killings.
