Donald Murphy: The Detroit Serial Killer

Overview

Donald Murphy was an American serial killer, sex offender and repeat criminal who preyed on women in Detroit, Michigan, during a terrifying series of murders in 1980. Murphy was convicted of killing two women, Cynthia Angela Warren and Cecilia Marie Knott, but he confessed to several additional murders. Investigators suspected that he may have been responsible for at least six killings and possibly more. Because evidence was insufficient to prosecute him for every death he claimed, the exact number of his victims remains uncertain. Murphy operated during a period in which Detroit police were investigating the deaths of numerous young women. Eighteen women were killed in the city between January and December 1980 under circumstances that raised fears that one or more serial killers were active. Many of the victims were involved in prostitution or lived in vulnerable circumstances. Their bodies were discovered in vacant lots, fields, alleys and isolated areas across Detroit. Differences in the methods of killing led detectives to believe that at least two offenders may have been responsible for the larger group of murders.

Early Criminal History

Murphy was born in Detroit in 1944. Long before he was identified as a murderer, he had accumulated a serious criminal record involving sexual violence, robbery and burglary. On February 10, 1967, he was convicted under a law then described as carnal knowledge of a female, an offense involving sexual assault. He was sentenced to six months in the Detroit House of Correction and fined $1,000. On July 28, 1969, Murphy was arrested for an unarmed bank robbery. He received an eight-year federal prison sentence but was paroled on October 10, 1972. He soon returned to criminal behavior. After attempting to burglarize a business, he was sentenced on February 13, 1974, to a term of one to five years in the Michigan prison system. He was paroled approximately ten months later and eventually completed his federal sentence in May 1976. ...
