Early Life
Winford LaVern Stokes Jr. was born on March 21, 1951, in St. Louis, Missouri. He was one of ten children and dropped out of school in the 8th grade. This early departure from formal education marked the beginning of a troubled path that would lead to a series of violent crimes.First Recorded Crime: Murder of Ignatius DiManuele
On April 30, 1969, Stokes, along with David H. Richards and Allen E. Smith, entered a tavern at 3044 Easton Avenue in St. Louis. Posing as customers, they drew pistols and announced a robbery. They forced the patrons and the owner, Ignatius DiManuele, to lie on the ground while they emptied the cash register. During the robbery, one of the assailants shot DiManuele, later stating he "wanted to get a whitey." The trio fled in Stokes' vehicle. Approximately two weeks later, detectives Brian Graft and Edward DeVere arrested Stokes after he attempted to discard a pistol during questioning. Witnesses identified all three men as the perpetrators of the robbery and murder.Escape from Custody
While awaiting trial at Homer G. Phillips Hospital, Stokes, along with four other inmates, escaped on October 23, 1970. They overpowered a guard, stole his revolver, clothing, and car keys, and fled. Three of the escapees were recaptured shortly after, but Stokes remained at large until his subsequent arrest. ...Read MoreVictims
