Pamela Rae Benda, a 33-year-old white female and divorced mother of three, was found murdered in her University City, Missouri apartment on February 21, 1978. Employed as a waitress at the Washington University Faculty Conference Center, she had last been seen alive on February 12, 1978. Her nude body was discovered on the bedroom floor, with a pillowcase over her head and an apron tied around her neck. She had been both strangled and stabbed.
