A quiet evening in the Brookside neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri, turned tragic on October 25, 2016, ending in the death of 64-year-old Nicki Alexopoulos. A retired and much-loved teacher, she was fatally shot by her 38-year-old son, Patrick Alexopoulos, in a shocking murder-suicide that stemmed from a history of domestic turmoil and financial desperation.
On that Tuesday evening, Nicki was at her home on Central Avenue with a friend, Alice Snodgrass, who had driven from out of
town to visit. The visit took a dark turn when Patrick arrived, confronting his mother over a significant amount of money he had embezzled from her. The argument escalated, and Patrick, armed with a 9mm handgun he had purchased that morning, shot and killed his mother.
As the tragic events unfolded, Snodgrass attempted to flee the house but was shot multiple times in the front yard. She was found by police with critical injuries and transported to a hospital. After shooting his mother and her friend, Patrick Alexopoulos went back inside the residence and took his own life. When law enforcement arrived, they discovered the bodies of both Nicki and her son inside the home.
Investigations following the incident revealed a troubled history within the family. Friends and family members disclosed that Nicki had been a victim of domestic abuse in the past. In the weeks leading up to the murder-suicide, the tension between mother and son had reportedly been building as Nicki had discovered the extent of her son's theft and was taking steps to address it, including changing locks and filing police reports.
