Myana Monique Henderson was a 21-year-old woman residing in Kansas City, Missouri, known to her loved ones for her vibrant personality and passion for music. She was an aspiring songwriter and performer who often shared her singing and rap lyrics on social media, dreaming of one day performing for large crowds. On the morning of August 13, 2022, the summer day began with routine errands as Henderson walked to a local convenience store in the Pendleton Heights neighborhood.
She was accompanied by her sister’s boyfriend, and the pair planned to visit a recording studio later that day so she could tape a new song she had written.
Around 9:45 a.m., Henderson and her companion exited the BP gas station located in the 1900 block of Independence Avenue. As they left the store, a white Chevrolet Malibu pulled into the parking lot and parked near the gas pumps. A man, later identified by authorities as 23-year-old D’Angelo L. Fisher, emerged from the vehicle. Witnesses reported that he was wearing an orange hoodie with an orange bandana covering his face. The gunman immediately ran toward the victims and opened fire, first striking the male victim in the leg near the store's entrance. When Henderson attempted to flee the scene, the assailant chased her across the parking lot, continuing to fire his weapon. She was struck multiple times and collapsed in the northwest corner of the lot, where she was pronounced dead by responding officers.
The investigation quickly uncovered a history of harassment leading up to the violent attack. Interviews with the surviving victim and Henderson’s family revealed that she had been receiving threatening phone calls from a man she knew socially as 'D'Angelo.' The caller had reportedly harassed her for weeks, accusing her of infidelity and threatening her with physical harm. Detectives learned that Fisher had recently been released from prison in February 2022 after serving time for a robbery conviction and was on parole at the time of the shooting. Surveillance footage from the gas station captured the suspect’s vehicle, which matched a white Chevy Malibu registered to Fisher. Further review of traffic stops from days prior showed the same vehicle with distinct identifying markers, including a specific sticker above the taillight.
Authorities utilized forensic evidence and digital technology to build their case against Fisher. A court order for his cell phone records placed his device in the area of the homicide at the time it occurred. Additionally, crime scene investigators recovered nine. 45-caliber shell casings from the parking lot. DNA analysis performed on the casings developed a genetic profile that was linked to Fisher. On October 31, 2022, police arrested Fisher, who was found in possession of a semi-automatic handgun. He was subsequently charged by the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, two counts of armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm. He was held in the Jackson County jail without bond as the case proceeded through the legal system.
