James Allen Red Dog: A Detailed Account of His Crimes

Early Life and Background

James Allen Red Dog was born on February 1, 1954, in Poplar, Montana, within the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. He was of mixed Sioux and Assiniboine heritage. Growing up in an environment marked by poverty, Red Dog later attributed his criminal behavior to the lack of opportunities on the reservation. He admired an older half-brother who was incarcerated, which influenced his early inclination toward crime. Despite his upbringing, prosecutors later argued that many individuals from similar backgrounds did not resort to violence, suggesting that Red Dog's actions were driven by personal choices rather than solely by his environment.

Criminal Beginnings

Red Dog's criminal activities began in 1973 when he committed an armed robbery on the Fort Peck Reservation. Alongside an accomplice, he targeted a liquor and pizza store. During the robbery, the owner, William Veseth, was killed. Red Dog was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison for this crime.

Escape and Subsequent Murders

In 1977, while on furlough to attend a Native American ceremony, Red Dog escaped custody. He fled to Los Angeles with a companion. There, they met two Native American men, Stanley Large Jr. and Moses Alex John, in a bar. The men offered them lodging for the night. However, Red Dog and his accomplice stabbed Large and John to death in their sleep on August 10, 1977. Red Dog pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder but received a sentence concurrent with his previous armed robbery conviction, meaning he served no additional time for these murders. ...Read More
