On January 17, 1987, O'Neall abducted a 14-year-old girl in Portland, Oregon. Spotting her walking along a freeway, he threatened her with a knife and an unseen revolver, forcing her into his truck. He then drove to a secluded area in Clackamas County, where he subjected her to multiple hours of rape and sodomy. After the assault, he released her near her home. The victim underwent a rape examination, and evidence was collected, but O'Neall had already fled, altering his appearance and relocating to Edgewood, Washington, under the alias Herb Johnson.
March 1987: Murder of Robin Smith in Edgewood, Washington
On March 28, 1987, O'Neall and his girlfriend, Mary Barnes, visited Baldy's Tavern in Puyallup, Washington. There, they met 22-year-old Robin Smith and her fiancé, Larron Crowston. Inviting the couple to an after-hours gathering at their apartment, O'Neall waited until Crowston left for a fishing trip. Barnes also departed for a few hours, and upon her return, both O'Neall and Smith were gone. Smith's disappearance was reported, and investigations led to the discovery of her bloodstained jacket and remains in a wooded area near Greenwater, Washington. Evidence indicated she had been bludgeoned to death with a hammer.
