Theodore John Kaczynski, known as the "Unabomber," was an American domestic terrorist, mathematician, and former professor who carried out a nationwide bombing campaign between 1978 and 1995. His attacks targeted individuals involved in modern technology and industrial society, leaving a trail of devastation before his eventual capture in 1996.
Early Crimes and Bombing Campaign
Kaczynski's bombing campaign lasted for nearly two decades, during which he sent or placed 16 bombs that killed three people and injured 23 others. His targets included university professors, airline executives, and computer store owners, all of whom he viewed as contributors to the decline of human freedom due to technological advancement.
Victims and Attacks
- May 25, 1978 - The first bomb was sent to Northwestern University, addressed to professor Buckley Crist. It exploded when opened by a security officer, Terry Marker, who suffered minor injuries.
- May 9, 1979 - A second bomb exploded at Northwestern University, injuring graduate student John Harris.
- November 15, 1979 - A bomb was placed on American Airlines Flight 444, but it failed to detonate fully. The smoke forced an emergency landing, but no one was seriously injured.
- June 10, 1980 - United Airlines President Percy Wood was injured when he opened a mailed bomb at his home in Illinois.
- October 8, 1981 - A bomb was placed in a hallway at the University of Utah, but it was safely defused.
- May 5, 1982 - A package bomb injured professor Patrick Fischer at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee.
- July 2, 1982 - A bomb severely injured engineering professor Diogenes Angelakos at the University of California, Berkeley.
- May 15, 1985 - Computer store owner John Hauser was injured when a bomb exploded in his store in Sacramento, California.
- June 13, 1985 - A bomb was found and safely removed from a Boeing commercial jet in Chicago.
- November 15, 1985 - University of Michigan psychology professor James McConnell was targeted. His research assistant, Nicklaus Suino, was injured.
- December 11, 1985 - Hugh Scrutton, a computer store owner in Sacramento, was killed by a bomb placed in his parking lot. He was Kaczynski’s first fatality.
- February 20, 1987 - Gary Wright, a computer store owner in Salt Lake City, was severely injured by a bomb placed outside his business.
- June 22, 1993 - A mailed bomb injured geneticist Charles Epstein at his home in California.
- June 24, 1993 - David Gelernter, a Yale University professor, was severely injured by an explosive package.
- December 10, 1994 - Thomas J. Mosser, a New Jersey advertising executive, was killed by a mail bomb.
- April 24, 1995 - Gilbert Murray, president of the California Forestry Association, was killed by a mailed bomb.
