Fred Cranshaw: 2005 Sash, Texas Church-Area Mass Shooting

Overview

On the evening of Sunday, August 28, 2005, Frederick Leroy “Fred” Cranshaw opened fire near the Assembly of God church in Sash, an unincorporated community in Fannin County, Texas (about 120 miles north of Dallas). Four people were killed before a nine-hour standoff ended early Monday, August 29, when Cranshaw was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Timeline of Events

As dusk fell on August 28, witnesses reported Cranshaw crossing from his home toward the Assembly of God church property, where Pastor James Wayne Armstrong, his wife, and another couple were outside talking. After a verbal confrontation in which Cranshaw shouted at the group, he produced a handgun and began firing, fatally striking two men on the church grounds. He then drove off and, at a nearby stop sign along Farm-to-Market Road 100, shot into a vehicle that had stopped, killing two women. Cranshaw returned to his residence and held law enforcement at bay through the night. At approximately 6:00 a.m. on Monday, August 29, officers entered the house and found him dead from a self-inflicted wound.
