On August 28, 2005, in the small town of Sash, Texas, a tragic incident unfolded that led to the death of Ceri Litterio, a 45-year-old woman. The events began when Freddie L. Cranshaw, a 54-year-old man with a partial right arm, engaged in a confrontation with church member Wes Brown in the parking lot of the Sash Assembly of God church. Cranshaw, who had a history of disturbing behavior, returned shortly after the altercation and shot Brown, 61, and the church's pastor, James Armstrong, 42, at
close range. Both men were found dead in a grassy area next to the parking lot.
Following the initial shootings, Cranshaw drove to an intersection where he encountered a truck towing a horse trailer. Inside the truck were Ceri Litterio, 45, and Holly Love Brown, 50, who were returning home after a weekend of riding horse trails together. Cranshaw opened fire on the truck, and despite their attempts to flee, both women were killed. Witnesses reported hearing the women's screams as they tried to escape. The authorities believe that the women's deaths were random and that they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
After the shootings, Cranshaw returned to his home and barricaded himself inside, leading to a nine-hour standoff with the police. During the standoff, Cranshaw fired at officers, preventing them from entering the house. Eventually, a SWAT team used tear gas to gain entry, and Cranshaw was found dead in a bedroom from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The weapons used in the shootings, along with additional firearms and ammunition, were discovered inside the house.
The incident left the small community of Sash, with a population of around 300 people, in shock. Cranshaw's erratic behavior had been a concern for some time, with neighbors reporting that he would shout obscenities and fire a gun while standing in his yard. Despite these reports, authorities had not arrested him as he remained on his property. The tragic events of August 28, 2005, brought an end to Cranshaw's reign of terror, but not before claiming the lives of four innocent individuals, including Ceri Litterio.
