Ernest Wesley Brown, a 61-year-old man, tragically lost his life on August 28, 2005, in Sash, Texas. Brown was fatally shot by Frederick Leroy Cranshaw, a 54-year-old man who had recently moved to the area. Cranshaw opened fire with a .38-caliber revolver outside the Sash Assembly of God church, killing Brown and Pastor James Wayne Armstrong, 42, who was also present at the scene.
The incident began when Cranshaw, who had been living a reclusive life repairing car radios, confronted the group outside the church. Witnesses reported that Cranshaw was shouting obscenities and expressing frustration with the group before pulling out his weapon and opening fire. The two men, Brown and Armstrong, were killed in the attack, while two women, Holly Love Brown and Ceri Litterio , were also shot and killed as Cranshaw continued his rampage.
Following the shooting, Cranshaw fled the scene and engaged in a nine-hour standoff with police. During the standoff, Cranshaw continued to shoot at anyone who approached, including law enforcement officers. Eventually, police were able to enter Cranshaw's home and found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation revealed that Cranshaw had no known history of violence or criminal activity in the area, and his motives for the attack remained unclear.
The tragic events of that day shook the small community of Sash, leaving residents in shock and mourning the loss of their loved ones. The incident highlighted the devastating impact of gun violence and the importance of community safety and support in the aftermath of such tragedies.
