Rev. James Wayne Armstrong, a 42-year-old male pastor, tragically lost his life on August 28, 2005, in Sash, Texas. He was fatally shot by Frederick Leroy Cranshaw, a 54-year-old man, during a violent rampage that also claimed the lives of three other individuals. The incident occurred outside the Assembly of God Church, where Rev. Armstrong and his wife were talking with friends in the yard.
Cranshaw, who had been living in the area for about a year, reportedly had a history of disturbing behavior, including shouting obscenities and firing guns on his property. On the night of the shooting, Cranshaw confronted Rev. Armstrong and his companions, exchanging heated words before pulling out a .38-caliber handgun and opening fire. Rev. Armstrong and his friend Ernest Wesley Brown, 61, were killed on the spot. Cranshaw then continued his rampage, shooting two women, Ceri Litterio, 45, and Holly Love Brown, 50, as they drove by.
After the shootings, Cranshaw fled to his home and engaged in a nine-hour standoff with police. During the standoff, he continued to shoot at officers before ultimately taking his own life. Authorities later discovered that Cranshaw had a history of mental health issues and had been living a reclusive life in Sash.
The tragic events of that night left the small community in shock and raised many unanswered questions about Cranshaw's motives and the circumstances leading up to the shooting. Despite the extensive investigation, no further arrests or litigations were pursued, as Cranshaw was the sole perpetrator and had died by suicide.
The loss of Rev. James Wayne Armstrong and the other victims deeply affected the community, and their memories continue to be honored by those who knew them.
