Javier Alatorre and the 2019 Tequila KC Bar Massacre

Overview

Javier Alatorre was one of two gunmen responsible for a mass shooting inside the Tequila KC Bar in Kansas City, Kansas, during the early morning hours of October 6, 2019. Alatorre and his accomplice, Hugo Villanueva-Morales, entered the crowded neighborhood bar armed with handguns and opened fire. Four men were killed and five other people were wounded in the sudden attack. The massacre occurred at Tequila KC, a small private bar located at 1013 Central Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas. The establishment was filled with patrons when the gunmen returned following an earlier confrontation. Investigators concluded that the shooting was an act of retaliation connected to the dispute rather than a random attack against strangers.

The Dispute Before the Shooting

During the hours before the massacre, Alatorre and Villanueva-Morales became involved in a confrontation inside Tequila KC. Accounts of the incident indicated that the two men argued or fought with people at the bar and were forced to leave the establishment. Instead of allowing the confrontation to end, Alatorre and Villanueva-Morales allegedly obtained handguns and returned to the bar. Their decision to come back armed transformed a relatively ordinary dispute into a planned retaliatory assault. Prosecutors maintained that the men entered together and deliberately began shooting at the people inside.

The October 6, 2019 Massacre

At approximately 1:27 a.m. on October 6, 2019, Alatorre and Villanueva-Morales entered Tequila KC carrying handguns. Once inside, they fired repeatedly in an enclosed area occupied by customers and employees. Patrons attempted to hide, drop to the floor or escape as bullets struck people throughout the bar. Four men suffered fatal gunshot wounds. Five additional victims were wounded, producing a total of nine shooting victims. Emergency personnel arrived to find a chaotic scene, with victims lying inside the building and survivors attempting to understand what had happened. The four deceased victims were pronounced dead at the bar. The injured victims were transported to hospitals for emergency treatment. Although the surviving victims' injuries varied in severity, authorities reported that all five initially survived the attack. ...
