Background

Richard Louis Hunter, born in 1955 in Atlanta, Georgia, is a convicted American serial killer and forger. In 1986, Hunter, a day laborer, committed a series of heinous crimes targeting elderly women in Atlanta. His modus operandi involved raping and killing his victims before robbing their apartments.

The Crimes

Between March and April 1986, Hunter terrorized the Atlanta community with a string of brutal murders. Each crime bore chilling similarities, instilling fear among residents, especially the elderly.

  • Annie Rochelle Copeland
    • Age: 85
    • Date of Discovery: March 1, 1986
    • Location: Southwest Atlanta
    • Details: Copeland lived alone in a small apartment. A neighbor, concerned after receiving no response, discovered her lying on her bed in the fetal position, covered with a bedspread and blanket. Her face was obscured by a pillow and her blue nightgown. The apartment was ransacked, with items from her pocketbook scattered, and a bloody pillowcase placed between her legs. Entry was gained by cutting the screen of a living room window and removing the windowpane.
  • Aretha Clements
    • Age: 61
    • Date of Discovery: March 6, 1986
    • Location: Northwest Atlanta
    • Details: Clements' son, Felton, found her deceased in her ransacked apartment. She had been manually strangled and wrapped in her bedspread, her nightgown disarranged. Her head was positioned against the foot of the bed, with her right leg beneath her. The apartment showed signs of a struggle, with overturned plants and emptied drawers. A 25-inch color TV set and her pocketbook were missing.
  • Dena Mae Mike
    • Age: 62
    • Date of Discovery: March 11, 1986
    • Location: Atlanta
    • Details: Mike, a blind woman, hadn't been seen for two days before her body was discovered. She had been smothered, with several objects placed on her head, including a sweater, pillow, plastic garment bag with clothing on hangers, and a duffel bag. Her nightgown was disarranged, and a bloody pillowcase was found between her legs. The perpetrator likely entered through a kitchen window.
  • Grace Hill
    • Age: 65
    • Date of Discovery: April 9, 1986
    • Location: Northwest Atlanta
    • Details: Hill was found partially naked on her living room floor, suffocated, and possibly sexually assaulted. A newspaper was placed over her chest, and a doll between her legs. The killer entered through an unlocked back door.
