Early Life
Wayne Donald Horton was born on January 26, 1950, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Growing up in poverty, he dropped out of school in the mid-1960s. By the late 1960s, Horton had moved to Los Angeles, California, where he engaged in criminal activities such as theft and car theft, selling the stolen vehicles for profit.
First Known Murder: May 1972
In May 1972, Horton met a woman at Atomic Liquors in Las Vegas. After spending the night drinking and dancing, they left together. During their drive, an argument ensued when she objected to him smoking marijuana. Enraged, Horton beat her to death with a jack handle and buried her body in a shallow grave in the desert south of Las Vegas. Her skeletal remains were discovered on February 5, 1973, but she remains unidentified, known only as "Henderson Jane Doe."
Arrest and Robbery Conviction: June 8, 1972
On June 8, 1972, Horton and an accomplice, 20-year-old Robert W. Holmes, were arrested in Downey, California, for robbing two men at gunpoint. They were convicted of felony robbery and sentenced to eight years in prison each. Horton was paroled after serving three years and returned to Las Vegas to live with relatives.
