In the early morning hours of Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in a residential neighborhood in Dublin, Georgia, tragically ending the life of 24-year-old Sacred Brown. The shooting, which occurred just after 2 a.m. in the 500 block of West Avenue, also claimed the life of 23-year-old Miyori Ellington and left five other individuals wounded.
Brown and Ellington were pronounced dead at the scene.
The subsequent investigation, led by the Dublin Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, quickly pointed to a vehicle that had stopped near a crowd of people before its occupants opened fire. Within days, authorities made three arrests in connection with the deadly assault. Kyndall Xavier Ashante Brazeal, 22, was taken into custody on April 1. His arrest was followed by that of 23-year-old Jaswain Martwain Bell on April 2, and 27-year-old Quintez Dewayne Mercer on April 3. All three men faced a litany of charges, including felony murder, aggravated assault, and violations of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act.
The motive behind the indiscriminate shooting was revealed to be gang-related. Investigators determined that Bell and Mercer were members of a hybrid criminal street gang known as Money Power Loyalty. The intended target of the shooting was a rival gang member who was present in the crowd. Sacred Brown and Miyori Ellington were not the intended targets but were caught in the hail of bullets. The case proceeded to trial, where Kyndall Brazeal testified against his former associates, Bell and Mercer.
Following a 12-day trial, a Laurens County jury found both Jaswain Bell and Quintez Mercer guilty on all counts, including malice murder. Mercer was promptly sentenced to two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 410 years in prison. Jaswain Bell also received a sentence of two life terms plus 410 years. The swift arrests and successful prosecution were hailed by law enforcement as a significant step in dismantling the MPL gang's operations in the Dublin area.
