In the early morning hours of Friday, March 7, 2025, the life of 31-year-old Detrenell Michelle Downing was tragically cut short in the parking lot of the Hillcrest Apartments in Dublin, Georgia. A graduate of Dublin High School, she was known for her sweet and genuine heart, and a joyful spirit that spread kindness and laughter. She was a devoted mother to her children and a beloved daughter, sister, and friend.
The incident unfolded at approximately 5:20 a.m.
when Downing was confronted by her ex-boyfriend, 37-year-old Lenton OBryant Jones, who also went by the name Kobe Bryant Jones. The confrontation in the parking lot of her apartment complex escalated, and Jones allegedly shot and killed her. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they found Downing deceased from a gunshot wound. Tragically, her two sons reportedly attempted to perform CPR on their mother in the immediate aftermath.
Following the shooting, a search for Jones ensued, with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation joining the Dublin Police Department in the investigation. On Monday, March 10, 2025, Lenton OBryant Jones turned himself in to the authorities at the Dublin Police Department. He was subsequently arrested and booked into the Laurens County Detention Center.
Jones has been charged with a number of serious offenses, including Malice Murder, two counts of Cruelty to Children in the 1st Degree, one count of Aggravated Assault, and one count of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. Downing's body was transported to the GBI Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. The case is expected to be handed over to the Dublin Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for prosecution. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
