In the early morning of September 6, 2023, the life of 16-year-old Shamiriuna Coney, a Black female from Dublin, Georgia, was tragically cut short. At approximately 7:30 a.m., Coney went to a residence on Woodlawn Street in Dublin. Shortly after her arrival, she was shot by an occupant of the house. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they discovered Coney outside the home with gunshot wounds.
She was quickly transported to a local hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries and passed away.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in by the Dublin Police Department to lead the inquiry into the young girl's death. During the initial stages of the investigation, the shooter claimed that he believed a home invasion was in progress and that he fired his weapon in an act of self-defense. It was only after the shooting that he realized the victim was someone he knew.
Following a thorough investigation, on September 15, 2023, authorities arrested 20-year-old Latavious Ramon Walker in connection with Coney's death. Walker was subsequently charged with two counts of aggravated assault, one count of felony murder, and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Further details from the investigation suggested that the incident was a tragic case of mistaken identity and that Walker and Coney had been in an 'on-again/off-again' relationship.
