On a Wednesday afternoon, February 16, 2022, a conversation between friends on a street corner in Newark, New Jersey, turned into a scene of tragedy. James Shaw, a 25-year-old Black / African American male, was talking with two acquaintances at the intersection of Shephard Avenue and Mapes Place when he was approached from behind. The assailant, without warning, fired a single, fatal shot to the back of Shaw's head, causing him to collapse instantly.
