On a Wednesday afternoon, February 16, 2022, a conversation between friends on a street corner in Newark, New Jersey, turned into a scene of tragedy. James Shaw, a 25-year-old Black / African American male, was talking with two acquaintances at the intersection of Shephard Avenue and Mapes Place when he was approached from behind. The assailant, without warning, fired a single, fatal shot to the back of Shaw's head, causing him to collapse instantly.
Emergency services were quickly on the scene, alerted by a ShotSpotter device that detected the gunfire. First responders found Shaw struggling for his life amidst multiple shell casings. He was rushed to University Hospital, but despite the efforts of the medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries. In a final act of selflessness, James Shaw was an organ donor.
The investigation into the senseless act of violence was led by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
Their efforts led to the identification and arrest of a suspect, Mahdi Wright, a 20-year-old from the neighboring city of Elizabeth. The motive for the deadly encounter was not made public, but the evidence against Wright was compelling enough to bring the case to trial.
After a month-long trial, an Essex County jury found Mahdi Wright guilty of first-degree murder and related weapons offenses. The verdict brought a measure of justice to James Shaw's grieving family. Following the conviction, Wright faced the possibility of a life sentence in prison for his actions on that fateful afternoon.
