In the city of Newark, a tragic story of recurring family loss unfolded with the death of 27-year-old Rodney Wrice. On the evening of December 22, 2023, gunshots rang out on the 200 block of Springfield Avenue. Police responded to a call at 9:52 p.m. and discovered Wrice suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to University Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at 10:28 p.m.
The shooting was a devastating blow to a family already shattered by
gun violence. Rodney was the last of four brothers to be killed in the city. His family's ordeal began in 2015 with the death of his brother, Najee Daniels. This was followed by the killing of his eldest brother, Jameel Daniels, in 2016, and another brother, Hadee Wrice, in 2017. The series of violent deaths left a profound scar on the family and the community. Known to his loved ones as Ahmid, Rodney was described as a sweet and sensitive man who was big on family.
