Edward Spreitzer and the Chicago Ripper Crew

Introduction

Edward Spreitzer was a member of the notorious Chicago Ripper Crew, a group responsible for a series of brutal and ritualistic murders in the early 1980s. Alongside Robin Gecht and brothers Andrew and Thomas Kokoraleis, Spreitzer participated in heinous crimes that terrorized the Chicago area. The crew's actions involved abduction, sexual assault, mutilation, and murder, often with a ritualistic and cannibalistic nature.

Crimes and Victims

The Chicago Ripper Crew's known victims include:

  • Beverly Washington: 20 years old. Abducted on October 6, 1982; survived the attack. Found near a railroad track with severe injuries, including the amputation of her left breast.

Arrest and Convictions

The breakthrough in the case came after Beverly Washington's survival and detailed description of her attacker and the van. This led to the identification and arrest of the Ripper Crew members. The outcomes for each were as follows:
  • Robin Gecht: Convicted of attempted murder, aggravated kidnapping, deviate sexual assault, and rape for the non-fatal assault of Beverly Washington. Sentenced to 120 years in prison.
  • Edward Spreitzer: Pleaded guilty to multiple murders and was sentenced to death, later commuted to life imprisonment without parole in 2003.
  • Andrew Kokoraleis: Convicted of multiple murders, sentenced to death, and executed by lethal injection on March 17, 1999.
  • Thomas Kokoraleis: Convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, later reduced to 70 years. Released from prison on March 29, 2019.
