Background
Joseph Briggen was a farmer from Byron, Illinois, whose shocking crimes came to light in the early 20th century. Although not as well-known as other serial killers of his time, Briggen's case drew attention due to the gruesome discovery of multiple human remains on his property and the peculiar circumstances surrounding his crimes.Modus Operandi
Briggen was known in his community as a reclusive and eccentric man who raised hogs on his rural farm. He used his isolated property as the site of his murders, where he allegedly disposed of his victims’ remains by feeding them to his hogs or burying them in and around the barn. His crimes came to light in 1910 when law enforcement, acting on suspicions and reports of missing persons, conducted a search of his farm.Discovery and Arrest
In 1910, authorities discovered multiple human bones and skulls on Briggen’s property. The findings shocked the small farming town. Briggen was arrested and later confessed to several murders. However, due to the disposal methods and decomposition, it was difficult for investigators to identify all of the victims. Briggen claimed that many of the people he killed were "hobos" or drifters who came to his farm seeking work or shelter. ...Read MoreVictims
