Kevin Bernard Haley: A Detailed Account of His Crimes

Early Life and Background

Kevin Bernard Haley was born on October 21, 1963, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was the younger of two brothers, with his older brother, Reginald, born in 1960. Around 1965, the Haley family relocated to Los Angeles, California. Both brothers became involved in criminal activities from a young age, primarily engaging in theft. In the early 1980s, they developed an addiction to crack cocaine, which investigators later identified as a significant factor contributing to their escalation into more violent crimes. At the time of the offenses, Kevin worked as a dog groomer.

Criminal Activities and Arrest

Kevin and Reginald Haley were implicated in a series of violent crimes in the Los Angeles area between 1982 and 1984. Their criminal activities included approximately 500 burglaries, at least 60 assaults on women involving rape, and multiple murders, primarily in the Venice and Mid-Wilshire neighborhoods. Their crime spree came to an end when Kevin Haley was arrested on September 28, 1984, in Los Angeles on a burglary charge. During questioning about the murder of 55-year-old Dolores Clement, who had been raped and murdered in her home the previous day, Haley denied involvement and was released. However, fingerprints collected linked him to the crime scene, leading to his re-arrest on October 9, 1984. He was subsequently charged with the rape and murder of 56-year-old Laverne Stolzy, found dead in her home on June 25, 1984.

• Elizabeth Karp, 89: Beaten and strangled at her home on West Olympic Boulevard, Los Angeles; the exact date was not released.
• Elizabeth Burns, 79: Raped and murdered at her home on Reeves Drive, Beverly Hills; the exact date was not released.
