Gary Gene Grant: A Detailed Account of His Crimes

Introduction

Gary Gene Grant, born on June 29, 1951, in Renton, Washington, is an American serial killer who committed a series of brutal murders between 1969 and 1971. His crimes shocked the small community of Renton and left a lasting impact on the families of his victims.

Background

Gary Grant grew up in poverty, with his parents engaged in low-skilled labor. His mother was an alcoholic, and his childhood was marked by frequent fights between his parents. Grant dropped out of school in the mid-1960s and later joined the Army, only to be dismissed due to mental health issues. He returned to Renton, where his killing spree began.

Crimes

Grant's crimes were characterized by extreme violence and a lack of remorse. He targeted young people, with three of his victims being children under the age of 17. Below is a detailed account of his known victims:
  • Carol Adele Erickson: On December 15, 1969, 19-year-old Carol Erickson was attacked by Grant while heading home from the Renton Municipal Library. He stabbed her with a knife, dragged her body into nearby bushes, and sexually assaulted her corpse. He then physically abused the body, leaving lacerations on her neck.
  • Joanne Mary Zulauf: In September 1970, 17-year-old Joanne Zulauf was attacked by Grant in the middle of the day. He hit her on the head with a stone, dragged her into the woods, raped, and strangled her. Her nude body was found on September 22, 1970. Grant later gave his girlfriend a wristwatch he had taken from Zulauf's body as a birthday gift.
  • Scott Andrews and Bradley Lyons: On April 20, 1971, Grant encountered two 6-year-old boys, Scott Andrews and Bradley Lyons, playing outside. He threatened them with a knife, took them into the woods, beat them, and then killed them. Andrews was stabbed, and Lyons was strangled. Their bodies were found two days later, covered with leaves and branches.
