Marcus Bryan III Shrader: A Detailed Account of His Crimes

Background

Marcus Bryan III Shrader, born in 1941 in Camden, New Jersey, served as a Navy corpsman stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In 1974, he committed a series of heinous crimes that terrorized Onslow County.

Crimes

  • January 1974: Murder of Ginger Rader Shrader kidnapped 23-year-old Ginger Rader and forced her to assist in a bank robbery. After the robbery, he shot her to death.
  • August 2, 1974: Murders of Cindy Howard and Karen Amabile Fifteen-year-olds Cindy Howard and Karen Amabile went to mail a letter at the post office when they were approached by Shrader's 16-year-old stepdaughter, Debra Ann Brown, who offered them a ride home. Once in the van, Shrader handcuffed the girls, bound their mouths with pantyhose, and taped their eyes. He then sexually assaulted and strangled them. Their bodies, clothed only in panties, were found in the Bear Creek area.
  • August 16, 1974: Murder of Cheryl Potter Boyd Shrader kidnapped 19-year-old Cheryl Potter Boyd from the parking lot of the post office on New Bridge Street. He forced her to assist in robbing a nearby bank, during which he wore a green ski mask. After the robbery, he shot her in the face and left her body in the car behind New River Shopping Center.

Investigation and Arrest

On August 18, 1974, a break in the case occurred when a corpsman recognized Shrader from a wanted poster, despite the suspect wearing a ski mask in the image. The corpsman had dined with Shrader a week earlier and identified him by the freckles around his eyes. This information led investigators to search Shrader's Cedar Point home, where they discovered a "chamber of horrors" in the attic, indicating he had been molesting and raping his five stepchildren. ...Read More
