On July 21, 2017, 20-year-old Jalayah Hackman, a sophomore at the University of North Alabama, was fatally shot in Quinton, Alabama. The incident occurred around midnight during a street party on Church Street in the Quinton community. A confrontation between two men escalated into gunfire, and Jalayah was struck in the neck by a stray bullet while attempting to intervene and de-escalate the situation.
