Early Life
Gary Charles Evans was born on October 7, 1954, in Troy, New York. He grew up in an unstable home with physical abuse from his father, Roy Evans, targeted at both Gary and his mother, Flora Mae Evans. His mother attempted suicide multiple times, and Gary himself claimed to have been raped by his father at the age of eight.
Criminal Beginnings
From an early age, Gary showed an interest in valuable items and began stealing. At the age of eight, he was caught stealing jewelry worth $1,000. During his school years, he continued to steal small items and shoplift, earning a reputation as a thief. After his parents divorced in 1968, Gary and his mother moved to Cohoes, New York.
First Arrests and Escapes
In the summer of 1970, Gary was arrested for breaking and entering and was sent to a juvenile detention center for three months. After his release, he left his mother's home and began living as a vagrant. On January 13, 1977, he was arrested for trespassing and stealing property in Lake Placid, New York, and was sentenced to four years in the Clinton Correctional Facility.
