In the autumn of 1997, the life of Timothy 'Tim' Rysedorph, a 39-year-old male from the Colonie, New York area, came to a tragic and violent end. On October 3rd, Rysedorph, a man described by his wife as a comical joker and a talented heavy metal drummer, vanished after making a late-night call to her from a local Dunkin' Donuts. His car was later discovered abandoned at an Amtrak station, leaving his family, including his young son, in a state of desperate uncertainty. For months, his disappearance remained a painful mystery, with his wife clinging to the hope of his return while investigators feared the worst.
The grim reality of Rysedorph's fate was uncovered nearly nine months later when his decomposed and dismembered remains were found in a shallow grave in a remote area of Rensselaer County. An investigation revealed he had been shot multiple times in the head. The focus of the investigation quickly turned to a close and longtime friend of Rysedorph, a career criminal named Gary Evans. It was determined that Evans was the last person to be seen with Rysedorph on the night he disappeared. The two had a history of criminal association, including a shared storage unit for stolen goods.
The resolution to the case came not from a lengthy trial, but from the conscience of the killer himself. In May of 1998, Gary Evans walked into a police station in Vermont and confessed to a string of murders, including that of his friend, Timothy Rysedorph. Evans admitted to shooting Rysedorph out of paranoia, fearing that Rysedorph would expose his involvement in a previous murder from years earlier. He led investigators to the location where he had buried Rysedorph's dismembered body.
Before he could be fully held accountable for his crimes in a court of law, Gary Evans orchestrated a dramatic and final escape. While being transported by U.S. Marshals in August 1998, Evans kicked out the window of the transport van as it crossed the Troy-Menands Bridge and leaped to his death into the Hudson River below. His suicide brought a sudden end to the legal proceedings, leaving a trail of unanswered questions for the families of his victims, including the family of Timothy Rysedorph.
