In the East Harlem neighborhood of New York, a sense of dread hung in the air for 17-year-old Lewis Encarnacion. On the morning of September 13, 2017, the young man, a student at Heritage High School, confided in his mother, Belkis Perdomo, about a chilling premonition. He told her that some kids from the nearby Johnson Houses wanted to kill him. Despite his fear, he never made it to the local police precinct to report the threat. That night, his mother's worst fears became a grim reality.
