In the early moments of a Sunday morning in June 2023, the life of 18-year-old Eliahs Emuel Brazoban was tragically cut short on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Just after midnight, on June 25th, Brazoban was shot once in the neck outside the Rivington Food deli, located at the corner of Rivington and Pitt Streets. First responders found him with the fatal wound, and he was rushed to New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Brazoban, a resident of
the Baruch Houses, had faced some legal troubles in his past. However, those close to him said he was actively working to turn his life around. He had been participating in a program called Avenues for Justice, an East Village-based alternative-to-incarceration initiative, since July 2021. His family and advocates expressed that despite past mistakes, he was determined to create a better future for himself. He had aspirations of obtaining his driver's permit, joining the Air Force, and pursuing a career in business or technology.
Three months after the shooting, an arrest was made in connection with Brazoban's death. On September 22, 2023, police arrested 36-year-old Jonathan Morales, who also lived in the Baruch Houses, just a neighboring building to Brazoban's. Morales was charged with murder. The motive for the killing was not immediately clear to investigators. Brazoban's grieving stepfather described the act as an 'execution' and lamented the senseless violence plaguing their community.
