On July 12, 2024, at approximately 9:50 a.m., a fatal shooting occurred at the chess tables near the 7th Street and Avenue A entrance of Tompkins Square Park in New York City. The victim, 74-year-old Fermin Frito, was known to be involved in the local drug trade, selling substances such as crack cocaine and heroin from this location.
