In the winter of 2017, a young man named Michael Riley, 22, lost his life in a burst of violence outside a Harlem bodega. On the evening of January 25th, Riley was inside the Adnader Inc. grocery store at the corner of Saint Nicholas Avenue and West 121st Street with his girlfriend. At approximately 8 p.m., as the couple exited the store, their night took a tragic turn.
An argument that had reportedly begun earlier between Riley and another man escalated dramatically on the sidewalk.
While details of their dispute remain unclear, the confrontation culminated in the other man drawing a firearm. A single, fatal shot was fired, striking Riley in the head. First responders found him grievously wounded outside the bodega. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. A worker at the bodega later recalled that the two men had been in an argument that night.
The investigation into Michael Riley's death led the New York Police Department to a suspect. In early March of that year, authorities arrested 24-year-old Hector Centeno. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Michael Riley, bringing a measure of progress to a case that had abruptly and violently ended a young man's life.
