In the early spring of 2024, the life of 33-year-old Kenneth Taveras was abruptly cut short in a burst of violence that echoed through the parking lot of the Polo Grounds Towers in New York. On the night of March 3rd, Taveras was shot multiple times in the chest and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. His death left his family, with whom he lived at the NYCHA complex, heartbroken and searching for answers.
Taveras was described by his mother as a good man who was loved by
everyone and went out of his way to help others. His life was on an upward trajectory; he had recently enlisted in the Army and was just three months away from reporting for duty. This new path was a source of pride for his family, a dream he was pursuing to follow in his brother's footsteps and make his mother proud. A memorial of candles, balloons, and flowers quickly grew in the parking lot where he lost his life, a testament to the community's grief.
In the wake of the shooting, the New York Police Department began their investigation. Initial reports suggested that three to five men were seen fleeing the scene in a dark-colored pickup truck. While the police stated it was unclear if Taveras was targeted, his mother expressed her fervent hope for justice for her son.
More than a month after the fatal shooting, authorities identified a person of interest in the case. The NYPD announced they were searching for 24-year-old Gekron Williams in connection with the murder of Kenneth Taveras. As of that announcement, no arrests had been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
