On a late Sunday evening in the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan, tragedy struck, leaving two men dead and another wounded. James Michael, a 44-year-old man, was identified as one of the deceased. The incident unfolded just before midnight on Father's Day, June 16, 2024, near the 207th Street subway station at the intersection of West 207th Street and 10th Avenue.
According to police, a dispute escalated into violence when a gunman opened fire on a group of men.
Michael was grievously wounded, having been shot in the face. Emergency services rushed him to Harlem Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. Another man, identified as 40-year-old Alejandro Ramirez, was shot in the chest and succumbed to his injuries at NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital. A third victim, a 37-year-old man, was shot in the leg but survived the attack.
The investigation into the deadly shooting moved swiftly, and within two days, an arrest was made. Late on the following Tuesday night, police took a 16-year-old male into custody in connection with the double homicide. The teenage suspect, whose name has not been released due to his age, was subsequently charged with two counts of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. The community was left in shock by the violent act and the young age of the alleged perpetrator. A small memorial for Ramirez was created near the scene of the shooting as residents mourned the loss of two lives.
