Vernon John Kroening, a 32-year-old Minnesota native and former Benedictine monk, was the music director, choirmaster, and organist at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Greenwich Village, New York. On the night of November 19, 1980, Kroening was heading home from a musical rehearsal when he decided to stop at the Ramrod bar in the West Village.
