A selfless mother's life was tragically cut short in a hail of bullets on a Brooklyn street corner, a victim of a gang dispute that had nothing to do with her. Zurana Horton, a 34-year-old mother of twelve, was picking up one of her children from a school in the Brownsville neighborhood on October 21, 2011, when gunfire erupted. In her final moments, she acted heroically, shielding a group of children from the spray of bullets, an act that saved their lives but cost her own.
She was struck in the chest and died at the scene. Another woman and an 11-year-old girl were also wounded in the shooting.
The senseless act of violence stemmed from a feud between rival gangs. From a rooftop overlooking the street, Andrew Lopez, an 18-year-old member of the 8 Block gang, opened fire with a 9mm handgun. His intended targets were members of the rival Young Goons. Lopez fired approximately thirteen rounds into the crowd of parents and children who were making their way home from school. His actions turned a routine afternoon into a scene of chaos and tragedy.
In the days following the shooting, the New York City Police Department launched an intensive investigation that quickly led to the identification and arrest of those responsible. Andrew Lopez confessed to being the gunman. His half-brother, 22-year-old Jonathan Carrasquillo, was also arrested and charged with murder, accused of ordering the shooting. A third individual, another of Lopez's half-brothers, 17-year-old Kristian Lopez, was charged with weapon possession. The arrests brought a small measure of relief to a community shaken by the brutal and random nature of the crime.
The legal process that followed sought to bring justice for Zurana Horton and her family. In April 2013, a jury found Andrew Lopez guilty of murder and two counts of assault. He was subsequently sentenced to 55 years to life in prison. During the trial, prosecutors presented a video of the incident that captured the terrifying moments of the shooting and Horton's heroic actions. While Lopez expressed sorrow for the family's loss, he maintained his innocence at his sentencing. In a separate verdict, Jonathan Carrasquillo was acquitted of the murder charges, as the jury did not find sufficient evidence that he had ordered the shooting.
