Nathaniel Levi Gaines, a 25-year-old African-American male from Yonkers, New York, was fatally shot on July 4, 1996. The incident that led to his death occurred on the 167th Street subway station platform of the 'D' line in the Bronx. Gaines, a veteran of the Persian Gulf War with no criminal record, was a highway toll taker.
