Nathaniel Levi Gaines, a 25-year-old African-American resident of Yonkers, New York, tragically lost his life on July 4, 1996. Gaines, a veteran of the Persian Gulf War, was fatally shot by New York City Transit Police officer Paolo Colecchia at the 167th Street subway station platform of the "D" line in the Bronx.
