It was a summer day in New York City on July 25, 1988, when Ronald Hearn, a 49-year-old male officer with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Police, was shot and killed in the line of duty. The fatal encounter took place at the Bronx VA Hospital where Officer Hearn was stationed at a metal detector at the entrance of the facility.
